janis-joplin1I like Janis Joplin’s heart tattoo design so much. and I’m a fan of heart tattoo designs. The history of heart tattoos dates back to the 20th century during which sailors and soldiers sported heart tattoos. Sailors normally got heart tattoos designed and inscribed “Mom” at the center of the heart and soldiers had girlfriend or wives’ names crafted on the heart tattoos.

Heart tattoos symbolize unconditional love since heart is considered to be the seat of the soul and wearing a heart tattoo conveys strong emotional bonds and meaning. Heart tattoos are a symbol of love, affection, caring, and passion. Heart tattoos are very popular with celebrities and some of the famous celebrities with heart tattoos include Jennifer Aniston, Ewan McGregor, Melanie Griffith, Minnie Driver, Kate Moss, and Rob Lowe to name a few, but one of the first artists who defined and introduced the heart tattoo to the world as an acceptable form of art appreciation and decoration was Janis Joplin.

Janis Joplin, the famous female rock star who rose to fame in the mid 1900s and some of her famous songs included What Good Can Drinkin’ Do, Typewriter Talk, Long Black Train Blues, Mercedes Benz, Careless Love, Trouble In Mind etc., Janis Joplin was one of the first few singers who came up with the innovative idea of sporting tattoos as a form of decoration and symbolism, thereby introducing the concept of tattoos to the world of performing arts.

Janis Joplin got two tattoos designed for herself, the first one a wrist tattoo in the design of a Florentine bracelet and a heart tattoo embossed on her left breast. Janis Joplin’s tattoo was designed by Lyle Tuttle based in San Francisco and became one of the most famous heart tattoos of her times and continues to be widely designed by several people all over the world today because of its elegance and beauty. Janis Joplin’s heart tattoo had several admirers among friends, and fans and Lyle Tuttle himself admitted to have designed several hundred Janis Joplin heart tattoos after Joplin’s death in the year 1970. Janis Joplin is said to have informed people that her wrist tattoo was for everyone but her heart tattoo designed on her left breast was for her friends.

Some of the other famous heart tattoos sported by famous artists, actors, singers, and celebrities include the heart-and-dagger tattoo, the rose-heart tattoo, the green heart tattoo with names inscribed in the middle of the heart, the heart-with-wings tattoo, the sacred-heart tattoo, and other small heart tattoos. Heart tattoos have gained tremendous popularity all over the world as a symbolism of universal love and peace. Sporting heart tattoos today communicates love, harmony, and peace which is much needed in today’s world of bitterness, hatred, and crime. People sporting heart tattoos are sending out powerful messages of love, friendship, and peace into the world!
